Life in Unionville - Banner Designs

During the 2020 school closure, the Unionville BIA invited student artists from Unionville High School’s Arts Unionville program to design eight banners that celebrate the charm, culture, nostalgia and picturesque ambiance of this unique destination - Main Street Unionville.

Grace Choi, Unionville High School Student Artist, Artist Statement:

What makes Main Street Unionville the pace that is its? What makes this historic street a special part of our city? To capture the charm, nostalgia and picturesque ambiance of this destination, I worked with the idea of “life on Main Street Unionville.” through these designs we want to represent the diverse and unique experiences that take place on Main Street. It is a world of its own packed into a street, dense in opportunities that you may not only view but also engage in. The process of creating these designs involves discussing with friends, peers, and others familiar with Main Street of our fond experiences and memories created here. These shared experiences became the basis of each design: walking dogs along the street, festivals and performances at the bandstand, Toogood Pond, exploring art at the Varley Art Gallery, and taking strolls with friends and loved ones.

This is a place that promotes community and unites people, acting as a social and cultural hub for people of all ages and backgrounds. with bright colours and surreal elements floating throughout the skies, the artwork reflects the vibrance and diversity we see here. I hope to imbue the sense of wonder and beauty that continues to exsist here. Art is meant to tell and share stories, and I hope that these artworks resonate with others’ stories from Main Street. We hope to illustrate a welcome-back to life in Unionville that we know and love.
